Happy Birthday!!!

We had the cake a day early because on Birthday Night we went to see Billy Collins read his poetry at the Hillstead Museum Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. So it was really more of a two-day birthday extravaganza if you ask me!

The Cake:

Once you get up to a certain age, the candles just don't fit on the cake anymore. But that doesn't mean you can't make the most out of it!

Devil's food cake with vanilla buttercream frosting covered with dark chocolate shavings. I think we both knew that cake wouldn't last very long.....

The Festivities:

Here's the birthday boy at the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival and our view of Billy Collins. We had great seats! It was an outdoor event and the rain clouds started to roll in at one point, but they held off. It ended up being a beautiful night and (hopefully!) a very happy birthday.

A plans-free weekend

As of late Friday afternoon, we had nothing planned for this weekend. We love weekends like that! The great thing about them is that we're free to do whatever we want and that usually makes for a pretty good time.

The weekend started out at the cell phone store. We figured we'd combine our cell phone plans to save money. When we went in, we found out that I could get a pretty cool cell phone for free because I had upgrade credits that I never used. John had recently gotten a really nice cell phone from his friend Mark. So now we both have phones with more functions than we'll ever use. Mine's on the left, John's is on the right.

After getting home from the store on Friday, we made plans to go visit Mike, Erica, and Annie on Saturday, so of course we had to enter that appointment into our fancy new phones...

Saturday morning we decided to take a trip to the New Britain Museum of Art. There was an exhibit on California Impressionists ending, so we checked that out. It's a great little museum. It only takes an hour or so to walk through and there was a nice variety of art. Best of all, admission is free from 10-noon on Saturdays!

Then, we set off to see Annie. Our visit was right before her lunchtime, so she was a bit quiet, but we got a few smiles out of her =)

Annie caught in the act trying to steal my bling.

She loves to wave

"Oooooh, I can totally grab that!"

She doesn't need much help to stand! She'll be running around in no time...

There's that smile!!

And that was it for Saturday. Sunday was fairly uneventful. Morning walk, pancakes with strawberries, Red Sox game, nap, ice cream sundaes at Mortenson's. Pretty much the usual for a Sunday. A nice ending to a very relaxing weekend.

Weekend at Mom's

We had a wonderful weekend at Mom's! It was a full house. Tim, Ali, Caroline, Emily, and Julia were there too. We went out on the boat and caught some striped bass and Tim got 5 lobsters in his traps, so we had lobster for lunch on Sunday. Of course, playing with the girls and getting to hold little Julia were the highlights of the weekend!

The Captain of the High Seas reeling one in!

This is one of the smaller fish. We only caught one keeper, and threw that one back too. It's hard enough reeling in the little ones. They put up quite a fight!

Hanging out with Julia (4 weeks old). She's so adorable. When she breaks into a little smile, it'll melt your heart....
